So you've booked your outdoor family session — yay! 🎉 That's the exciting part. Now comes the part where the group chat starts blowing up: "What are we wearing?" "Should the kids nap?" "What if someone has a meltdown?" (Spoiler: they might. It's totally fine. That's what I'm here for.)
As a Boise and Meridian family photographer, I've photographed hundreds of families across the Treasure Valley — from golden-hour sessions at Camel's Back Park to breezy summer evenings along the Boise River Greenbelt. And after all of that, I've learned exactly what helps families show up relaxed, connected, and ready to have a great time.
Here's everything you need to know to prepare for your outdoor family photoshoot in Boise, Idaho. Let's make it fun!

1. Choose the Right Time of Day (Golden Hour Is Your Best Friend)
Idaho's outdoor light is absolutely stunning — but timing is everything. The best light for outdoor family photos in Boise is during "golden hour": the last 60–90 minutes before sunset. The sun gets soft, warm, and glowy, and everyone looks like they're lit by a filter.
In the summer, that means sessions around 7–8 PM. In fall and spring, closer to 5–6 PM. I'll always help you pick the perfect time when we schedule your session, but knowing this upfront helps with planning around nap schedules, dinner routines, and tired toddler energy. 😄
2. What to Wear: The Boise Outdoors Edition
Here in the Treasure Valley, our landscape is gorgeous — golden hillsides, lush greens, big Idaho skies. Your outfits should complement it, not compete with it. Here's a simple formula that works every single time:
Choose a color palette of 2–3 tones and coordinate — don't match. Think warm neutrals, soft terracotta, sage green, dusty blue, or creamy white.
Avoid neon colors or busy patterns. They photograph as distracting and can pull focus from your beautiful faces.
Dress in layers if your session is in fall or early spring — Boise mornings and evenings can get chilly fast!
Comfort matters. If the kids are uncomfortable, they'll tell you — loudly. Stretchy waistbands and soft fabrics are your friends.
Bring a backup outfit for little ones. Spills happen. This is Idaho. We embrace it.
3. Pick a Location That Feels Like You
One of the best things about doing outdoor family photos in Boise is that we are spoiled for stunning locations. A few of my favorites in the area:
Camel's Back Park — rolling green hills and gorgeous trees, perfect for a relaxed and playful session.
Boise River Greenbelt — lush, peaceful, and beautiful any time of year.
Lucky Peak — incredible views, wildflowers in spring, and that quintessential Idaho feel.
Hyde Park neighborhood — charming streets with beautiful light filtering through mature trees.
Your own backyard — seriously! Sometimes the most meaningful sessions happen at home, where kids are totally comfortable.
Not sure where to go? No worries at all — I'll make a recommendation based on your family's vibe and the season. That's part of what I'm here for!
4. Prep the Kids (Without the Pressure)
Here's the secret no one tells you: kids do NOT need to be perfectly behaved for great photos. They just need to be themselves. My job is to capture your family as it actually is — giggly, wiggly, unpredictable, and full of love.
That said, a few things really do help:
Make sure little ones are well-rested and fed before your session. A hungry or overtired toddler is nobody's favorite co-star.
Talk it up beforehand! Tell them it's going to be fun, that there might be a special treat after, and that they get to run around outside.
Bring a small snack or quiet fidget toy in your bag for in-between moments — just keep it out of the photos!
Don't bribe with candy right before. (Trust me on this one. 🍭)
5. Plan for Idaho's Unpredictable Weather
Welcome to Boise, where you can experience all four seasons in one week. ☀️🌧️❄️🌸 A few tips for rolling with it:
Check the forecast 24–48 hours before and dress in breathable layers when in doubt.
A little overcast sky is actually a photographer's dream — soft, even light, and no harsh shadows!
I monitor the weather closely and will always communicate with you if we need to reschedule. Your comfort and safety come first.
Bring a light jacket for the kids. Boise evenings cool down quickly, especially near the river or in the foothills.
6. Show Up and Just Be Together
I say this to every single family before their session: your only job is to show up and be yourselves. Don't stress about posing — I'll guide you every step of the way. Don't worry about perfect smiles — the real ones are so much better. And definitely don't panic if the toddler refuses to cooperate for the first ten minutes. (It happens at literally every session. We work through it, I promise.)
The moments I love capturing most aren't the staged ones. They're the dad tickling the kids to get a real laugh. The mom squeezing her baby a little tighter. The big kid holding a little one's hand without being asked. That's where the magic lives — and those moments happen naturally when families are relaxed and having fun.
